Introduce myself to audience Introduce the topic of Technology We need to decide which way to go with technology in our school, purchase computers, or purchase curriculum enhancing digital-age technology. My goal is to: convince the school to vote for the curriculum enhancing technology.
*We begin with a history of what technology integration into the classroom looked like 20 to 30 years ago. Earle study: a article based study that looked at the 1970’s to 2002 researches and compared their views about technology integration. Findings include: The term Technology means to simply have a computer in your classroom. Of the teachers that did have the computers, less than ½ actually were utilizing them. A research study conducted by Trotters (in 1997) shows the following data, -chart: 43 % of respondents felt technology was not happening fast enough 74% of the public and 93 % of teachers felt technology could help students learn
*Looking at our next phase of our technology history timeline we see that we are starting to catch up in our current thinking. *Antoinette Harvey-Woodall completed a thesis research paper on several journal articles regarding Technology integration in the classrooms. *her findings included: -student vs. technology- students are being introduced to technological curriculum and are being expected to learn to adapt to it. -Teachers vs. technology- Teachers are being encouraged to use technology within their classes. -Teachers are also getting more access to technology pertinent professional development workshops. -Administration vs. technology-the research showed that those administrators who chose to model the use of technology within their applied work setting were more likely to have their faculty use technology in and applied work setting.
Within the next three research based studies we will see how technology has great impact on student learning. Technology is now a priority for the classroom. In the study by Barabec, Fisher and Pitler, they did a meta-analysis uses two studies, one which looked at 100 case studies and the other research which was turned in to a book called “Classroom Instruction that works: Research Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement, written by Marzano, Debra Pickering, and Jane Pollock. The conclusions from both studies: -Instructional strategies combined with the use of multi-media technology increase student achievement. -There are nine learning strategies which were proven to increase student learning-we’ll go into them in more detail later. - It was found that best practice was for the teacher to set up the lesson using these strategies prior to adding the technology aspect, this enhanced the students learning.
Here is a closer look at the nine Learning Strategies. It is recommended these strategies be used in conjunction with technology based lessons for the most student achievement and motivation.
*Here is another study that shows huge support for the idea of technology enhance lessons. This research looked at how technology influences student achievement in the classroom. Finding were: -Students use a higher level of thinking skills when completing a task. They were able to utilize their critical thinking skills in project that were technology based. They showed an increase in their levels of achievement. They had higher SAT scores and Math scores. Their use of technology gave them many basic skills they would find in the work force.
This study was also a research based observational setting. It was a laboratory classroom set up at Kent State University. The four elementary classrooms were selected to participate in this study All the classes were observed through a two way mirror The classroom was set with technology enhancing multi-media to help engage the students’ learning and increase their achievement. All participants were interviewed about their experiences. The results showed: Students collaborated with others’ Students were more motivated Their was higher student achievement.
*Here is a better picture of what the results were for the AT &T Study. *You can see the Three main results were a direct result of the Technology enhancing curriculum.
Why don’t we do a quick review of the last three studies we examined. We can see the comparisons between them in this chart. *This chart shows the positive outcomes of these three studies. Each study showed different, but supporting results.
As we move forward as a school to decide which would be the best route to go in our technology changes: To purchase new teacher computers Or, to look into the enhancement of our classroom technology I hope this presentation have given you all some insight as to many of the reasons that I feel we should proceed with enhancing out classroom technology. As you can see in this graph, these are the many, many advantages to using technology enhance curriculum within our lessons. I am certain this is the wave of the present and most certainly the future… VOTE YES for Technology.
